Why I Only Practice Part-Time

Patients often ask me why I’m only in the office part-time.

Some are disappointed that I’m not more available, and I am sorry I can’t always accommodate everyone’s scheduling needs.

The reason I only see patients part-time is because I’m trying to preserve my body and extend my years in practice as much as possible.

Being a chiropractor is hard on the body, especially when you do it every day for many years.

Several years ago, when I was still in full-time practice, I developed chronic pain in my shoulders and wrists. About the same time, two chiropractors I knew had to go in for shoulder surgery, and I figured I was going to be right behind them if I didn’t make some changes.

I already had some side-income sources set up with online businesses and although it was a hit to my income, I figured it was better to slow down by choice than to be forced to stop for an extended time, if not permanently.

That was in 2010, and I was fortunate to make the arrangement I have now to sublease facilities and staff from Dr. Otterman. I have most of the freedom of having my own practice with a lot less of the hassle that goes with it.

With my part-time schedule, I also (knock-wood) rarely have any significant wrist or shoulder problems these days

My regular schedule is really not open for debate – although that doesn’t stop some people from trying! I have come to the conclusion that it does nobody any good if I grind myself down physically and have to quit practicing.

I will add time in the office once in a while if my waiting list gets too long, and I do try to be available for emergencies as much as possible.

While I make no guarantees, if you find yourself with major symptoms on a day I’m not in the office or when my schedule is full, let whoever you talk to know that it’s an emergency and ask them to see if I can arrange a time to see you.

Please keep requests for emergency appointments to things that are actually urgent though.

Keep in mind that Dr. Otterman is often available in the office when I am not, so in a pinch, he can usually help you if you can’t see me right away.

He uses somewhat different techniques and isn’t nearly as good, nor as handsome as I am (who is?), but I let him adjust me, so he can’t be all bad, right?
